Google Holds The First Place In Renewable Energy, Apple’s Not Even On The List

google greenpeace Google Holds The First Place In Renewable Energy, Apple’s Not Even On The List Greenpeace published their fifth report that evaluates the IT companies’ efforts in using renewable energy and finding new climate solutions while developing their green policy. The annual report is known as the Cool IT leaderboard and includes companies that strive to use clean energy and reduce their impact on the environment.

According to the new report, this year the leader is Google. The company surpassed Cisco’s score, the top Cool IT company from 2011. Greenpeace praises Google for its commitment to use renewable energy and to promote the same policy to others.

Greenpeace IT analyst Gary Cook said “Technology giants have a real opportunity to use their power and influence to change how we produce and use energy – Google tops the table because it’s putting its money where its mouth is by pumping investment into renewable energy”.

Google was given 53 points from a maximum of 100 for their open support of clean energy and their plans to increase their renewable energy (RE) usage with 10% in 2012. The summary also points out that Google invested more than any other IT company in renewable energy projects. However, Google was scolded for shutting down their ”Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal” program.

The companies sharing the second and third place in the leaderboard after Google are: Cisco, Ericsson and Fujitsu. Other IT giants like Microsoft and AT&T didn’t do so well, but companies like Apple and Facebook were not included in the charts at all.

Greenpeace stated that Apple wasn’t in the list because it couldn’t even meet the minimum criteria and made no efforts in promoting or using renewable energy. At least Facebook’s new energy solution plans will probably put the company on the leaderboard of Greenpeace next year.
