35% Fresher with Google
Just a couple of days ago Google gave a start to the ”fresh” search, which aims at providing the newest information on hot topics and reoccurring events without the need of specifying it in the search. In the fresh search the most recent and relevant pages rank higher. The freshness of the results depends on the topic, though. The algorithm is supposed to figure out how much old results are relevant, according to the search topic. The new search is based on Google’s Caffeine indexing system, which makes possible the fast and extensive crawl of the web for newest results. In this way new pages will be indexed by Google almost immediately and sites will benefit from their most recent updates right away.
Google announced that the update will affect about 35 % of all queries and it will surely influence many websites, especially those who don’t rely on regular updates and news. Still, if you need older results, you can pick a custom period of time. Google understands that freshness is not the most important factor for all searches and tries to determine which ones require most recent results. As Amit Singhal wrote on the official Google blog: “Different searches have different freshness needs. This algorithmic improvement is designed to better understand how to differentiate between these kinds of searches and the level of freshness you need, and make sure you get the most up to the minute answers”. The fresh crawl will give results for news on recent events, trending topics, reoccurring events like annual competitions, meetings, conferences, also sport results, TV programs, product updates, etc.
Though the update is very recent, SEO experts started looking for explanations and strategies to get the best out of it. They believe that now having accurate and updated time-stamps is extremely essential. But could we be sure that fresh results actually offer better quality content? One thing is certain: the need for posting relevant content often is getting more significant and the fear that Google may penalize websites that don’t update regularly is growing.
